Oral history interviews with Walter H. Munk [sound recording] 1997-1998.

The collection consists of tape recordings and transcripts of five oral history interviews with geophysicist Walter H. Munk conducted by Ronald Doel. The interviews were all held in La Jolla, California, January 8, 1997, September 16 and 17, 1997, and February 4 and 5, 1998. Judith Horton Munk, wife of Walter Munk, participated in some of the interviews. The interviews proceed roughly chronologically beginning with Munk's family and early history in Austria, his education in the United States, his arrival at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1939 and his decision to become an oceanographer under the direction of Harald Sverdrup. The interviews focus on Munk's scientific career and his travels, expeditions, experiments, instruments, and publications. Munk describes his friends and colleagues including Teddy Bullard, Cecil Green, Gordon MacDonald, and Roger Revelle. Munk discusses the founding of the La Jolla branch of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics and reflects on the founding of the University of California, San Diego. Office of Naval Research and National Science Foundation support for oceanography is discussed. The influence of World War II and the Cold War on oceanographic research is discussed.

Geophysicist and oceanographer. Munk received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the California Institute of Technology in 1939 and 1940 and his Ph. D. in 1947. Munk served as assistant and associate professor of geophysics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1947 to 1954 when he became professor of geophysics in the University of California Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics.
